Kobe Sannomiya Theater A-tō (神戸三宮シアター・エートー) is a small 100-seat black box theatre, located about 3 minutes north of Sannomiya station in Kotonoo-cho. Opened in 2017, the venue offers a mix of fringe theatre, film screenings, rakugo (traditional Japanese comedy), dance, music, and forums.

The venue’s development story is quite interesting, and is the basis of a book cslled Shibaigoya Senki (Theatre Chronicles) by screenwriter Shinya Hishida. The book chronicles the venue’s development from it’s beginnings as a coin parking lot to a viable workplace for local theatre makers.

Unfortunately, Kobe has a distinct lack of performing arts venues compared to nearby Kyoto and Osaka. This was not always the case. The Shinkaichi, downtown area, west of Sannomiya, was a thriving entertainment district in the 1960s and 70s. So Theater A-tō is a welcome addition to the city’s performance culture.

Kobe Sannomiya Theater A-to is managed by Junko Oshita. You can find the latest events on the venue’s listings page here.

What you’ll find

  • An intimate 100-seat theater with a close-to-the-stage feel—great for small-scale drama, experimental work, and spoken-word formats.
  • Flexible seating (including standing configurations) that can shift the room’s energy depending on the program—useful for live music, talks, and festivals.
  • A “working venue” atmosphere in central Sannomiya—more local arts infrastructure than tourist attraction, best experienced by checking what’s on.

Getting there

A-tō is a short walk from JR Sannomiya Station (East Exit). From the station area, head toward Kotonoo-cho and walk a few minutes north (uphill/mountain side). Use the address “5-6-9 Kotonoo-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe” or search “KOBE SANNOMIYA THEATER A-tō / 神戸三宮シアター・エートー” in your maps app for the most accurate route.

Good to know

  • Check the event calendar first—there isn’t a standard “drop-in” visiting format like a museum; entry is usually tied to performances, rehearsals, or scheduled programs.
  • Expect variety: programming can range from straight plays to rakugo, talks, screenings, and live sets—so it’s worth revisiting the listings if you’re in town for a few days.
  • Great Sannomiya pairing: build this into an evening plan with dinner nearby, then walk back toward the station after the show.
