Kobe Book Fair and Market is a two-day book festival and marketplace hosted as part of Kobe City’s “Book Culture Promotion Project,” bringing together independent bookstores, publishers, used-book sellers, zines, and doujinshi from across Japan (with a strong Kobe and Kansai presence).

Whereas the inaugural event in March 2025 included around 80 exhibitors and roughly 4,500 visitors, the 2026 edition will expand to over 110 booths, designed to help more people encounter books across generations and genres.

Set inside the bright atrium of Kobe Fashion Mart on Rokko Island, the event is equal parts book-hunting and hangout: browse tables and shelves, chat with booksellers and makers, and take breaks with coffee and light snacks from food and drink booths. Alongside the market floor, the venue hosts stage talk events with booth owners and authors, plus workshops and storytimes geared toward kids, making it a fun reading culture day out.

One of the highlights is the on-stage programming. Across both days, talks explore book-related themes from community reading culture to the craft and infrastructure of bookstores. In this year’s event, Kobe’s mayor will appear on stage for a discussion tied to the Kobe Book Culture Promotion Project, anchoring the event’s bigger goal of building new readership and keeping book culture visible in everyday city life.

If you like the feel of indie book fairs, zines, small presses, unexpected finds, and the chance to talk directly with the people behind the books, this is one of the best “browse and discover” events in the city. It’s a great chance to see the range of independent book sellers, stores, activities, and themes that form the backbone of Kobe’s literary culture.

Good to know

  • Check Instagram before you go—stage schedules, exhibitor highlights, and last-minute updates are posted on @kobe_book_fair_and_market.
  • Bring a tote bag (and a browsing mindset): this is a discovery-heavy event, and impulse “one more book” purchases are basically guaranteed.
  • Plan for breaks: the atrium setup works well for alternating between browsing and coffee/snack time—especially if you’re visiting for several hours.
