If you’re interested in contemporary dance, or you want to see how a small theatre can become a neighborhood hub, then Dance Box is well worth a visit. It’s based in Shin-Nagata, a downtown multi-ethnic community to the west of the city. It can be quite tricky to find on your first visit, because it is tucked away in a shopping arcade complex.

That said, the arcade itself is worth exploring for its mix of wares, foods, and cultures. The theatre is a small black box space that promotes contemporary dance, theatre, music, talks, screenings, workshops, and community programs. It’s the kind of venue where you can drop in for a show, then come back for a class, an artist talk, or a local collaboration.

Getting there

Dance Box is located in Shin-Nagata on the 4th floor of Asta Kunizuka 4th Building. It’s quite tricky to find because the building is nestled in a bustline arcade, but it’s about a 10-minute walk from Shin-Nagata Station (JR + subway), and roughly a 3-minute walk from Komagabayashi Station (Kaigan Line). For navigation, plug the address + “ArtTheater dB KOBE” into your maps app.
