About

Originally from London in the UK, I’ve been living in Kobe since 2012. My background is in the performing arts and I teach at a small women’s college in Kobe.

One of the classes I teach is related to contemporary art, and so in an attempt to get my students out exploring art in the city (and beyond), I made a simple list of links to venues and events on the college’s intranet.

Over time, that list grew until it reached the threshold of unintelligibility. This year, I tried making the list more accessible and a bit more visually appealing, and I decided to open it up to other people who might be interested in art in Kobe. The result is this website.

Classrooms are useful and necessary, but any discussion of art, has to connect with lived experience, because art is practice. It’s full of energy, feeling, intuition, and questions about the world. It’s also very messy—in a good sense—because it’s the result of collaboration. Even the most solitary artist is engaged in inner dialogue with other artists, ideas, histories, and forms.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to visit many art related sites and organisations in Kobe, but there are many more I’ve yet to explore.

I hope this list will be of interest to others too, particularly if it’s your first time visiting Kobe. Please feel free to submit venues and events that I’ve overlooked via the submit button below.

If you find an error or you’d like me to take down a listing, no problem, just let me know here.

Finally, if you happen to have visited any of the spots on my list, I would be hugely grateful if you could share your experience by writing a quick review.

Thanks very much for stopping by.
