Gallery Yamaki Fine Art (GYFA) is located in Motomachi, central Kobe, inside the district’s main shopping arcade. It is a contemporary art gallery that was established in 2006. It specializes in postwar and contemporary art, and is known for introducing both Japanese and European artists, with a particular focus on historically important movements and dialogues that continue to shape contemporary practice today.
Beginning with presentations related to the late-1960s French movement Support/Surface, GYFA has continued to feature works by Japanese and European artists from the postwar period onward. The program includes solo exhibitions by established and emerging artists, as well as thematic and special exhibitions that connect historical work to contemporary perspectives.
More than five times a year, the gallery organizes exhibitions that balance scholarship, presentation quality, and public access. In addition to its Kobe-based program, GYFA actively participates in international art fairs, helping circulate Japanese art in global contexts through appearances at events such as Art Basel Hong Kong and Frieze New York.
Past exhibitions reflect the gallery’s wide-ranging interests across painting, abstraction, material-based practices, and intergenerational dialogue. Recent and past shows have included artists such as Asuka Nakayama, Michio Fukuoka, Kazuyo Kinoshita, Eri Morimoto, and group exhibitions exploring relief, three-dimensional form, memory, and the passage of time.
For visitors exploring Kobe’s art scene, GYFA is an excellent stop in the Motomachi area, small, focused, and deeply connected to contemporary and postwar art histories. It works especially well as part of a gallery day around Motomachi, Sannomiya, and the waterfront museum zone.
Gallery Yamaki Fine Art is in Kobe’s Motomachi area, on the 2nd floor of a building in Motomachi. It’s easy to visit as part of a central Kobe gallery walk. The gallery is about a short walk from JR/Hanshin Motomachi Station (west side area), and also accessible from the Kaigan Subway line.
