Kobe City’s two flagship professional ensembles, the Kobe City Chamber Orchestra (神戸市室内管弦楽団) and the Kobe City Mixed Chorus (神戸市混声合唱団), present regular concerts while also taking classical music into schools and community spaces.

Founded by Kobe City in 1981 (originally as the “Kobe Chamber Ensemble”), the orchestra is anchored by outstanding string players and works actively as a chamber orchestra by incorporating wind instruments. After years of recordings and overseas performances, it adopted its current name in 2018, and in 2021, world-renowned cellist and conductor Hidemi Suzuki became music director, continuing a focus on high-quality classical ensembles.

The Kobe City Mixed Chorus was established in 1989 as one of Japan’s few professional choirs. Known for a clear, dense blend and a wide repertoire, the chorus is also the resident ensemble of Kobe Cultural Hall, presenting seasonal regular concerts and collaborative projects, often alongside the sister orchestra, plus outreach performances across Kobe.

The main base for the two ensembles is Kobe Cultural Hall in Okurayama, two stops on the city underground line from Sannomiya. If you plan on seeing a performance, I recommend arriving a little early to explore the neighborhood, particularly the nearby park.

What you’ll find

  • Two top-tier city ensembles in one place—a chamber orchestra and a professional choir with frequent collaborations and a steady annual season.

  • Community-facing music culture—education and outreach activities that connect classical music with local life, not just the stage.

Getting there

For many major concerts, the key destination is Kobe Cultural Hall. It’s about a 1-minute walk from Okurayama Station (Kobe Municipal Subway Seishin-Yamate Line), around a 10-minute walk from JR Kobe Station, and roughly 8 minutes on foot from Kosoku Kobe Station. Use “Kobe Cultural Hall” (神戸文化ホール) in your maps app for the most accurate route.
