A quiet Ashiya literature museum dedicated to Junichiro Tanizaki, with rotating exhibits, archives, and programs near…
If you’re a fan of Japanese literature (or you just want a quieter, deeply local museum visit), the Tanizaki Junichiro Memorial Museum of Literature(芦屋市谷崎潤一郎記念館)is a wonderful stop in Ashiya, between Kobe and Osaka. It’s dedicated to novelist Junichiro Tanizaki (1886-1965), with exhibitions that move between his life, manuscripts/materials, and broader literary culture. The museum also has a beautiful Japanese garden.
Tanizaki was a novelist and playwright known for his exploration of complex themes such as beauty, femininity, and the cultural clash between traditional Japanese values and Western influences at the dawn of the 20th century.
The museum sits in Ise-cho near the waterfront parks, close to Ashiya’s other cultural facilities, making it easy to pair with the Ashiya City Museum of Art and History for a relaxed half-day. It’s the kind of place that rewards slow looking and a little curiosity, even if you’re meeting Tanizaki for the first time. Do note that the exhibits are almost entirely in Japanese, so a translation app (e.g. Google Lens) will be useful for non-Japanese readers.
It’s about a 15-minute walk from Hanshin Ashiya Station. From JR Ashiya Station or Hankyu Ashiyagawa Station, you can take a bus and get off at “Midoricho (美術博物館前)”, then walk about 1 minute. For navigation, plug “Tanizaki Museum Ashiya” into your maps app.
