What is “Museum Road”?

Museum Road (ミュージアムロード) is the nickname for a roughly 1.2 km north–south stretch in Nada Ward, running from Kobe City Oji Zoo down to the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art on the Kobe sea front. Along and just off this corridor, you’ll find a cluster of cultural spots, museums, galleries, and public art, making it one of Kobe’s easiest DIY walkable culture tours.

The main spots on (and around) Museum Road

These are the places most people build the route around:

• Yokoo Tadanori Museum of Contemporary Art
  Medium-size, high-impact museum with rotating exhibitions dedicated to Yokoo Tadanori.
• Hyogo Prefectural Harada no Mori Gallery (兵庫県立原田の森ギャラリー)
  This gallery adjoins the Tadanori Museum.
• Kobe City Museum of Literature (神戸文学館)
  Just across the road from the Tadanori Museum. Mostly all in Japanese.
• BB Plaza Museum of Art (BBプラザ美術館)
  These are explicitly called out as part of the surrounding cultural cluster on the Museum Road page.
• Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art (HAT Kobe)
  Big flagship museum in a waterfront district; a strong anchor for the day.

And don’t sleep on the public art and “in-between” moments, the route is designed to be enjoyed as a walk, not just a checklist.

How to plan a great 1-day Museum Road trip

Most reviews of Museum Road that I’ve come across recommend starting at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum and heading north up to the Yokoo Tadanori Museum near Oji Zoo.

I recommend doing it in reverse for two simple reasons. One, it’s downhill! Two, starting at the Tadanori Museum is easy in terms of trains. It’s a 5-minute walk from Oji-koen station on the Kobe Hankyu line.

Suggested 1-day itinerary

Morning (Get off at Oji-koen then walk for about 5 minutes past Oji Zoo and cross the road to):

1. Tadanori Yokoo Museum (aim to arrive near opening at 10am; plan for about 45 mins)
2. Head right next door to the Hyogo Prefectural Harada no Mori Gallery (plan for about 45 mins)
3. Walk the Museum Road corridor south and find a spot for some lunch around Nada Station.

Lunch:
Grab something around the Nada station area. There are plenty of casual options nearby from ramen to gyoza, or cafe style food.

Afternoon:
3) Drop into the BB Plaza Museum of Art (30 mins)
4) Then head to the final destination: the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art (plan for 60-90 mins).

Timing tips

• Most of these venues keep daytime museum hours, so the key is to start earlier rather than trying to cram everything late.
• Check the exhibition pages before you go—fees and last-entry rules can vary by show (especially at Yokoo).

A relaxed 2-day version for those who like to linger

Day 1: “Neighborhood culture crawl”

• Yokoo Tadanori Museum + (pick two) Literature Museum / Harada no Mori Gallery / BB Plaza Museum.

Day 2: “Big museum + waterfront”

• Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art + surrounding HAT Kobe seaside walk / public art.

This splits the day so you can actually enjoy exhibitions instead of speedrunning them.

Practical “how to do it” logistics

• Best direction: Start at Yokoo Tadanori Museum (north) and walk south. It feels natural to go down hill to the sea..
• Transit anchors: The route is designed around easy access between the Oji-koen / Nada side and the HAT Kobe museum area.
• Bring: comfy shoes + a charged phone (you’ll want maps for the “slightly off the corridor” stops).
• When to go: weekdays if you want it calm; weekends if you like busier museum energy.
