If you want a “big museum” experience in Kobe, the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art(兵庫県立美術館)is the essential stop. Designed by Osaka-native Tadao Ando and set in the seaside HAT Kobe district, it balances major special exhibitions with a strong collection, plus an outdoor sculpture setting that makes the approach feel like part of the visit.
This is also the natural end point for Museum Road: begin mountainside at Oji Park and walk south towards the water. Even if you only do one venue on the route, this route has some wonderful shops, cafes, restaurants and back streets, that makes the day feel complete.
The museum is in HAT Kobe by the waterfront. It’s about an 8-minute walk from Hanshin Iwaya Station, around a 10-minute walk from JR Nada Station, and roughly a 20-minute walk from Hankyu Oji-koen Station. For navigation, plug “Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art” into your maps app.
